Estimates only, not approvals
TowScout generates informational estimates from published manufacturer weight ratings and a set of stated assumptions. Every result on this site (compatibility verdicts, payload calculations, tongue weight estimates, combined weight figures) is an estimate. No result on this site is any of the following:
- A legal determination that a combination is road-legal in any jurisdiction
- An engineering opinion, analysis, or certification
- An endorsement or approval from any vehicle or trailer manufacturer
- A representation to, or determination from, any insurance provider
- A guarantee that any towing combination is safe
A result that says a pairing appears compatible based on entered specs or is within estimated limits is a starting point for your own research, not a conclusion. Not a substitute for manufacturer guidance or actual scale weights.
Vehicle ratings vary by exact configuration
Manufacturer-published tow ratings, payload ratings, and gross combined weight ratings depend on the vehicle’s exact configuration: engine, transmission, axle ratio, cab style, bed length, and installed options including the tow package. Two vehicles with the same name and model year can have materially different ratings if they left the factory differently.
The most accurate payload figure for your vehicle is the number on the yellow Certification Label on the driver’s door jamb. That number reflects the actual options installed on your specific vehicle, not a class average or a brochure maximum. Verify the sticker before every trip.
Trailer weights vary from published specs
A trailer’s published dry weight is a factory target. Real trailers vary due to:
- Optional furniture, appliances, and upgrade packages
- Dealer-installed accessories, equipment, and modifications
- Variations in tank size, framing, or materials between production runs
- Water, propane, batteries, food, clothing, tools, and gear you add after delivery
Cargo, a full fresh-water tank, and loaded house batteries alone can add several hundred to over a thousand pounds above the published dry weight. TowScout uses published specs because that is what is available before purchase. Your actual trailer almost certainly weighs more than its dry spec.
Verify before you tow
Do not rely solely on TowScout. Before towing any trailer you must confirm the actual ratings that apply to your specific equipment using each of the following:
- Vehicle owner's manual: for general towing limits and setup requirements
- Manufacturer's towing guide: for configuration-specific tow ratings, payload, and GCWR
- Vehicle door sticker: for your vehicle's actual certified payload
- Hitch label: for the receiver's tongue weight limit and maximum trailer weight
- Trailer certification label: for the trailer's GVWR and tire load ratings
- Actual scale weights: weigh your loaded vehicle and loaded trailer separately at a certified scale
Published numbers in databases and brochures (including the records on this site) are not a substitute for the documents and labels on your physical equipment.
Your responsibilities as the operator
Towing involves real risk to people and property. Safe towing requires more than numbers being within limits on a screen. You are solely responsible for:
- Selecting a hitch class, ball size, and receiver rating appropriate for your trailer
- Proper hitch installation and torque
- Brake controller installation, calibration, and testing
- Correct tire pressure on both the vehicle and the trailer
- Weight-distribution setup and adjustment when applicable
- Sway control selection and use when applicable
- Proper trailer loading: weight distribution front-to-back and side-to-side
- Verifying trailer brake function, lighting, and turn signals before every trip
- Compliance with all applicable local, state, provincial, and federal laws and regulations
TowScout evaluates published weight ratings only. It does not evaluate hitch setup, brake controller performance, loading technique, road conditions, driver experience, or any other factor that affects real-world towing safety.
Manual calculator results depend on what you enter
The tow calculator produces results based entirely on the values you type in. If a value is estimated, misremembered, or taken from a brochure rather than your door sticker, the result will reflect that. TowScout clearly labels user-entered values and flags results that depend on them, but it cannot verify what you type.
For the most accurate calculator results, use the payload figure from your vehicle’s door sticker, the tow and GCWR figures from your manufacturer’s towing guide for your specific configuration, and actual scale weights if you have them.
Verified records may still be incomplete
Records marked Verified have met TowScout’s sourcing standard: a source title, source URL, source type, and a minimum confidence score. That standard reduces errors, but it does not guarantee completeness or accuracy.
A record may meet the sourcing standard but still be missing fields (payload, GCWR, hitch tongue limit, or others) if those figures were not available in the source document at the time the record was entered. When a field required to evaluate a pairing is missing, TowScout returns an insufficient-data result rather than assuming the check passes. Source documents may contain errors. Manufacturers revise published figures over time. Always cross-check against the most current version of the manufacturer’s towing guide for your model year.
